Editorial Reviews:

When the home of Alex Cross's oldest friend, Ellie Cox, is turned into the worst murder scene Alex has ever seen, the destruction leads him to believe that he's chasing a horrible new breed of killer. As Alex and his girlfriend, Brianna Stone, become entangled in the deadly Nigerian underworld of Washington D.C., what they discover is shocking: a stunningly organized gang of lethal teenagers headed by a powerful, diabolical man--the African warlord known as the Tiger. Just when the detectives think they're closing in on the elusive murderer, the Tiger disappears into thin air. Tracking him to Africa, Alex knows that he must follow. Alone.

From the author Time magazine has called "the man who can't miss," CROSS COUNTRY is the most heart-stopping, speed-charged, electrifying Alex Cross thriller yet.

Summary: Crossed Out
Comment: I have to cross James Patterson off my list of worthwhile thriller authors. I have read more than 10 of his books and have enjoyed a number but his more recent solo efforts have gotten progressively worse. And while many of his novels require a certain suspension of belief, Cross Country goes too far with its contrived story line and the author's transparent desire to demonstrate that - like so many artists in today's popular culture - he too is hip to the horrors of Darfur and the Bushies' torture policies. Any sincere effort to educate Americans about the genocide in Africa is commendable. But to profit from it, sloppily point a finger of blame for it, and throw in a nechropheliac-for-hire to make it a page-turner is too much for this reader. Patterson has trivialized the actual human suffering taking place in Africa, done harm to his Alex Cross franchise, and demonstrated that he has little respect for his once-loyal readers.

Summary: Just average. . .
Comment: Cross Country is not James Patterson's worst book but it definately is not his best book either. Many "convenient" things happen that keep the plot moving along but weaken the feasability of the story. I personally did not care too much for the ending of this book. I won't ruin it with spoilers, I'll just say that it seemed "cheesy" at best. A big downer for me about James Patterson is the vast amount of blank space throughout his books. Cross Country was no different, a 400 page book seems like 200 pages if condensed. Not worth your money but probably worth a rent from your local library.

Summary: A Thrilling Tale
Comment: For being an avid thriller reader, I had not previously read any of Patterson's Alex Cross series. So while some other reviewers say they're disappointed because this is not what they expected, I didn't have preconceived expectations and found a thoroughly thrilling and descriptive story that kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me a very palpable sense of the scents, deceits, scenes, and tragic beauty of Africa. Patterson certainly did his research but he's not hitting you over the head with it; it's just enough to allow you to follow along closely (too closely for comfort) with Alex Cross as he goes up against the diabolical machine that seeks to destroy any obstacles to its oil acquisition. Cross doesn't care about that; he sees injustice and will stop at nothing to catch his man. Hair-raising and thoroughly captivating. I will read more of Alex Cross.

Summary: Absolute garbage
Comment: I second the Laura Bookworn review - the plot is an embarrassment, it is pulp fiction of the worst kind . The only redeeming feature - I will send a copy as a xmas gift to a relative I do not like - why should I be the only person to suffer.

Summary: Not the "Alex Cross" I have come to know
Comment: I had really looked forward to this book, however was disappointed. It was far more graphic than needed and quite frankly the story just "jumped all over the place". I found myself not really caring who the killers were. There wasn't any "build up". The part in Africa could have been reduced to 25 pages, it got "old" real quick. This book seemed to have been written by a writer that knew nothing about Alex Cross.
