Editorial Reviews:

Now expanded and updated–the #1 New York Times bestselling book in which one of America’s most brilliant doctors shares his famous program for improving and protecting your health

Eight Weeks to Optimum Health lays out Dr. Andrew Weil’s famous week-by-week, step-by-step plan that will keep your body’s natural healing system in peak working order. It covers diet, exercise, lifestyle, stress, and environment–all aspects of daily living that affect health and well-being. This revised edition includes the most up-to-date findings on such vital subjects as cholesterol, antioxidants, trans fats, toxic residues in the food supply, soy products, and vitamins and supplements, together with a greatly enhanced source list of information and supplies. Inside you will learn how to

• develop eating habits for greater health and well-being
• start an effective exercise program based on walking and stretching
• work with breathing patterns to decrease stress and improve energy
• solve sleeping problems
• eliminate toxins from your diet
• minimize environmental hazards in your daily life

Plus–programs tailored to the specific needs of pregnant women, senior citizens, overweight people, and those at risk for cancer.

“If there is a heaven, sixtysomething Weil is headed there, but if he practices what he preaches, probably not for some time yet.”
– London Times

“Dr. Andrew Weil is an extraordinary phenomenon.”
The Washington Post

Summary: Is a shortcut to health and longivity possible?
Comment: If a normal person followed all of this plan, their health might improve - at least temporarily - unless they experience injury. However, I believe that the good doctor goes overboard in his recommendations. In fact, many of his recommendations have proven to be nothing but a waste of money and effort. Others haven't even been properly tested.

I believe more practical books exist that are not formatted as specific make or break health plans - plans in which the author is not selling the products recommended in his books.

For example, I like John Robins book, "Healthy at 100." In this book, the author explores tribes of people around the world who live extremely healthy and long lives - even in the absence of modern medical care. It's clear how these people achieve health and longevity, but the readers are left to contemplate how much of these healthy practices they can fit into their own lives.

Shortcuts have never worked for me in anything. I just find them to entail higher risks. I want to simply live as long as possible, and as healthy as possible - to the end of my life. I believe I can best achieve this by trying to live a lifestyle similar to people who actually do achieve this goal.

Summary: Common sense isn't as common as you'd think
Comment: I actually read Dr. Weil's book a while back, but I recently went over it again recently, and decided to post a review.

A lot of Dr. Weil's advice seems very basic and more or less common sense, but you realize after reading his book how far from common sense most of us are. We know about the whole "stop to smell the roses" thing, but we don't do it. Dr. Weil points out these simple, overlooked facts and gives you a step-by-step program to slow down, think about your life, about how you live, what you do, and why.

Slow down, follow his advice, and be happier in your life. Pretty simple, right? Now do it.

Summary: Useful How-To Advice
Comment: This book carries practical advice, as well as structured suggestions, for making changes to improve over-all health. Exercise, diet, and breathing elements are covered. This book helped me deal with anxiety attacks without prescription medications. By following his advise, my general health improved noticeably in just one month. I still follow the overall plan, 6 years later!

Summary: Excellent book
Comment: This book is a very good first book to read if you are interested in becoming healthier. I like Dr. Weil's suggestions because he focuses on getting and remaining healthy rather than on getting well after getting sick. I have read a number of Dr. Weil's books, which are all excellent, but this is the one I recommend if you have not yet read any of his books.
