Editorial Reviews:

"AM I LOSING MY MIND?"

People with Borderline Personality Disorderexperience such violent and frightening mood swingsthat they often fear for their sanity. They can beeuphoric one moment, despairing and depressed thenext. There are an estimated 10 million sufferersof BPD living in America today -- each displayingremarkably similar symptoms:

  • a shaky sense of identity
  • sudden violent outbursts
  • oversensitivity to real or imagined rejection
  • brief, turbulent love affairs
  • frequent periods of intense depression
  • eating disorders, drug abuse, and other
    self-destructive tendencies
  • an irrational fear of abandonment and an
    inability to be alone

For years BPD was difficult to describe, diagnose, andtreat. But now, for the first time, Dr. Jerold J. Kreismanand health writer Hal Straus offer much-neededprofessional advice, helping victims and their familiesto understand and cope with this troubling, shockingly widespread affliction.

Summary: The "bible" for the Borderline's Parents
    Comment:
As a parent of a Borderline child, this is the book our family has needed. Every page is a teaching tool for dealing with BPD and understanding the thought processes of a Borderline. You cannot change the borderline, but this book teaches you how to understand, deal with, and make life bearable for the family of a bordeline.

Summary: Extremely outdated, sexist, and homophobic.
Comment: Wow! I just got halfway through this book and had to stop. It is embarrassingly outdated. First, it has zero references to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) or how DBT would understand Borderline Personality Disorder, possibly DBT hadn't really been developed when this book was written. This effects not just how the book looks at treatment but also how it looks at the etiology of BPD and makes it seem really behind the times in understanding the disorder.

Other then that, this book is full of weird constant references to domestic violence as caused by people with BPD provoking their husbands to beat them. It was extremely unsettling. Certainly people with BPD may be more likely to start fights with their partners, but it was strange to read about this as if physical violence against one's partner is somehow reasonable if that partner has a personality disorder. Disturbing. The book also claims that homosexuality is caused by a lack of role models, sexual assaults, and an insatiable need for attention. I'm not kidding. It also has a lot of misinformation about American cultural history as well. The authors spend more time talking about possible cultural factors that may contribute to the disorder then they do actually describing the disorder in any detail.

Please stay away from this book. Total waste of money and time.

Summary: Give it to me straight! Good work.
Comment: Nearly two decades later this book is still at the top of its game. The absolute beauty of this book is that it doesn't treat you like a helpless and fragile little kid. Here's the situation. This is how it is. I absolutely love that. I wish every book I read would be this blatantly, in-your-face honest with me. If you have borderline and aren't fragile, or even if you just find the brain interesting, this book is excellent. It thoroughly, clearly and blatantly lays out the situation for you to digest. I loved it.

    Summary: Still good
Comment: This book is still holding it's ground in this genre because it has excellent descriptive value. I recommend reading it along with this one I've linked by Sarah Shikitao-Brown. They make an excellent combo of knowledge and solution. Tao Cycle Therapy: Natural Happiness via Self Directed Cure for Chronic Anxiety & Depression [Updated 2008 3nd Edition]

Summary: I hate you don't Leave me
Comment: This book is an excellent and must read for anyone dealing with a person with Borderline Disorder. It is clear and concise and offers an excellent approach to dealing with a person with Borderline Disorder. It is an important book that both persons with the disorder, as well as, loved ones and those closest to the person with the disorder should read. I would highly recommend it.
