Customer Rating: Summary: Great Action Adventure Comment: I have to say that I love James Rollin's books, this one is no different. This story is about Jack Kirkland tarnished hero. He is the survivor of a shuttle explosion that he blames himself for. After an eclipse, the entire Pacific Rim has a series of earthquakes and sudden water level issues, may people die including the president. Jack is called in to dive the wreckage and find the cause. Mean while, Karen Grace is a Canadian that is studying Asian history. She discovers a strange crystal when the Dragon temples are raised from the water. This crystal has the strange property that the more light that is exposed to it, the lighter its weight is. This is the same crystal that Jack finds next to the wreck of Air Force One. So begins the fight to keep a Black Ops bad guy, that has it out for Jack, kept from killing Jack and Karen. But also to keep the world from coming to an end with the mysterious new crystal, its properties, and a huge vein of it underwater. I really like the details that went into this book. It was action packed and kept me from putting it down. I could see where some people could think the ending was a bit blunt and rough, but I still liked it and would recommend it to anyone that likes the Dirk Pitt books. Customer Rating: Summary: This is what an action-adventure story should be Comment: Every so often you just need to get away from it all and read a no-holds-barred, action-oriented, good guy vs bad guy action story. This one fits the bill to a tee. I have read three other books by Rollins so far and to tell the truth I was starting to get a little worried. The plots seemed to be getting a bit thin (or unrealistic) and the characters a little cliched. But Deep Fathom was a pleasant switch even though it is one of his earlier novels. It kept me turning pages and I cared about the characters. The ending was a bit over the top perhaps and some may consider it to be a cop out by the author (I can't really explain without a spoiler) but my feeling is if you're reading this kind of action novel then you'll be in the right frame of mind for the ending anyway. Kind of a Dirk Pitt, Indiana Jones, with a sci-fi twist Customer Rating: Summary: Seriously...buy something else. Comment: This is one of those books that actually inspires me to write a book of my own sometime. I have no formal training as a writer, but I know I could do better than this one. Other 1 star raters have mentioned to lack of character development, poor plot and other problems and I have to agree. When your main character thinks that all his friends and life posessions are gone and that deeply affects him for about 12 hours, after which he's just dandy again, you have a big problem- just to name one big problem. I'd write more, but I'm going to get my manuscript off to Harper/Collins. Customer Rating: Summary: Another Rollins Hit Comment: This book is similar to other James Rollins books in that it takes you all over the world to great environments, has a long lost civilization, and has a ton of action with a little bit of sci/fi to it. The book actually made me think at first that the TV show LOST had gotten it's idea from this book. The book starts off with a bang, has some very good character development with Kirkland fighting his past, and ties it all together in the end. Excellent read. I have read 4 James Rollins books so far and I would rate them in this order...Amazonia, Black Order, Deep Fathom, Sandstorm. They have all been excellent in their own way though.
