Summary: Painful
Comment: Ok, your husband is going to be hanged and unfortunately you can't help him. You've been abducted and are forced to care for a crew of yucky smelling men who are pooping blood. You then are stranded on an island miles from civilization, and several islands away from your husband. You must get to him with all haste. This is a dire moment. Even if you have the full confidence in you husband's abilities it would be normal to experience some worry.
But when I should feel a building of tension I get FULL descriptions of ENDLESS mundane details that a frantic person wouldn't even think to pay attention to.
Also this book is very formulaic. It's the same repetive use of this theme: a character gets a very short amount of introductory dialogue, then overly detailed descriptions of character appearance and some unnecessary physical actions ,then lastly a few short words more. Supporting characters are quickly stifled because Clare's character paraphrases everything the supporting characters should have revealed. Maybe Gabaldon didn't feel these characters deserved any sort of real devotion. She especially does this to Jamie. No character is as important Claire's clever observations or Claire's inner voice. It is as if Claire is a petulant, interrupting child, who must be heard above all else and believes she is the only one who has anything of value to impart. I don't want Clare to tell me what that character had to say....it is tedious because I would like to know how Claire feels about the information...is she scared? is she angry?? I don't know...because Claire's character must be in such bloody darn control ALL the time
.
Also Claire must have forgotten the trouble she got into the last books because Gabaldon gave her a permanent case of the "stupids".
We are not vaccinated against all diseases. Any doctor from the 60's would play dumb if confronted with mountains of bloody diarrhea. And it was just EGOTISTICAL for her to leave Jaime to be the hero when she was already underway on the VERY important mission of rescuing her nephew. Not to mention she have just been reunited with the love of her life and have such precious little time with him.
Gabaldon lost focus and was just writing to be writing. Could be condensed to 200 pages. Maybe less.

Summary: What a Ride!
Comment: So much has already been said about this series of books, but I can't help it, I have to add my two cents just in case there are still people out there who have put off reading this series because of the time-travel aspect, (which is why I didn't read them for so long as a big fan of historical fiction). Stop resisting, start at the beginning, go out and pick up a copy of Outlander and I promise you will not stop until you have read all of the books in the series!
The first part of Voyager covers the time Jamie and Claire spent apart and we learn what has been going on in Jamie's life. This is the first time we get to go inside Jamie's thoughts and feelings as chunks of the story are told from his point of view. I had to fight so hard not to skip ahead to their reunion, but it was worth the wait! This book has so many twists and turns! Like Claire, I was shocked to discover what was waiting for them at Lallybroch. I was so angry that my hands were shaking and I put the book down in disgust. But, like her, I came to my senses and I thoroughly enjoyed their adventures throughout the rest of the book!
What I love best about Ms. Gabaldon's series is her beautiful dialogue. The scene at Lallybroch where he describes what life has been like for him in Claire's absence, the scene on the ship where Jamie talks to Claire about courage, the scene near the end where he wonders how he can ever expect her to realize the difference between other relationships he's had and his feelings for her...so touching. And in all of the other scenes in between, their words to each other are always so true, so real. I could read 1000 pages of Jamie and Claire talking about nothing but the weather and still be captivated.
Outlander is still my favorite in the series, because I love reading about the beginning of their relationship, the trials they go through and watching their feelings for each other develop, but Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager are both wonderful, too. All of the books in the series are excellent, but the first three are the best!

Comment: Escapism, adventure, easy reading, and spicy - good for a long trip or snippet reading when you can steal time. Recommended for adult women with a healthy sense of imagination. The romantic aspect appealed to me less than the adventure and historical aspects. Not particularly well written or profound, rather for busy women who like to read to escape - this is a great series. The first book was best, the second slightly feeble, but this, the third, picks up steam and the content is varied and captivating. I want to visit Scotland now!

Comment: I first started reading this series a few years ago and highly await the next publication of the series. Written by a very talented Scottsdale, AZ author, Diana Gabaldon; this series of books is for anyone who wants to find a captivating read. The plot starts with a post World War II nurse who is visiting Scotland with her husband and accidentally steps through some stones back in time a few hundred years and how she has to adapt quickly to her surroundings in order to survive. She meets up with a band of Scottish highlanders who take her in and force her into marrying one of their own, the handsome Jamie who protects her from harm and the two end up madly in love. Sounds like a romance novel? Well, it is not. It is researched and written beautifully and you find yourself learning all there is to know about Scotland during this historical time. This novel is for history buffs and well versed readers. This is a series of books that lead us historically through time and place through the eyes of Clare and Jamie. After reading the first book, you will be looking to buy the rest of the series. Hooray for Diana Gabaldon!
