Editorial Reviews:

In one of Parker's finest, two gunmen arrive in the lawless town of Appaloosa where the actions of a renegade rancher have already taken their toll.

Summary: Fine Western
Comment: I am not a great Western fan, however, reading about the new movie with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen, based on Robert B. Parker's novel, I had to check out the book; and I was not disappointed. The characters were developed and drew me straight into the story. The storyline, while predictable, was always engaging. Best of all were the dialogs between Hitch and Virgil, sparse yet utterly entertaining.
The subtraction of one star is for the somewhat disappointing and strange ending.
Although the movie was quite enjoyable, it did not do the book justice. If you have only seen the movie, buy or borrow the book and read it. You should not be disappointed.

Summary: The Western Returns!
Comment: "Appaloosa" Reminds you of those Saturday Matinees with Randolph Scott shooting it out with the bad guys in the Saloon and the Good Guy gets the girl. Yet it's not all black and white. The good guys have flaws as well, it makes them human.

Parker puts good and bad on a western canvas colored with frailty.

Summary: Eye Candy
Comment: This easy reading book made a recent trans-ocean flight fly by (no pun intended). Falls into my "Eye Candy" category. Easy to read, occupies a few hours and no expectations for great lit, but decent writing. Great book for vacation reading.

Summary: Appaloosa
Comment: This book is enjoyable for the Western book fan. Robert B. Parker captures the period as if he time-traveled from there. Men were men, a no nonsense approach to life. This is the perfect western, second only to Gunman's Rhapsody, another book of his.

Summary: Great Western, Excellent Movie
Comment: I just came back from seeing the movie Appaloosa & I'm happy to report that it's as good as the book which says a lot. Robert Parker's Spencer series is first rate in the detective-thriller genre with a good dose of humor and philosophy added.
Appaloosa and the sequel Resolution are welcome additions with an authenic western setting and style. Bravo, Mr. Parker.
