“A stunning continuation”(Diana L. Paxson, author of Ravens of Avalon) of the New York Times bestselling author’s “splendid saga” chronicling an alternate world without technology.
Rudi MacKenzie continues his trek across the land that was once the United States of America. His destination: Nantucket, where he hopes to learn the truth behind The Change that rendered technology across the globe inoperable.
During his travels, Rudi forges ties with new allies in the continuing war against The Prophet, who teaches his followers that God has punished humanity by destroying technological civilization. And one fanatical officer in the Sword of The Prophet has been dispatched on a mission—to stop Rudi from reaching his destination by any means necessary.

Customer Rating: Summary: Good but end it already Comment: This is a pretty good book. The characters are interesting and the story moves. It however has no end and is a setup for the next book. I know sometimes writers spend a lot of time doing the research to create these wonderful worlds that they invite us into but jeez end it already.
Nothing is stopping you from writing another story using the same world. Known space has what, 50 books? Have conclusion for Pete's sake.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pretty good, but sometimes over the top Comment: The bottom line is, the book is a good read. Character development is solid and the series plot advances apace. The book can seem to cross from science fiction into fantasy, until one remembers Sturgeon's Second Law: Any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. The one gripe I have is the difficulty maintaining suspension of disbelief in a couple of relatively silly scenes. One involves some of the heroes developing expertise with completely new weapons within the course of a few months. Sorry, Mr. Stirling, swords are not guns. The even more silly scene involves our main protagonist jumping from stampeding buffalo to stampeding buffalo like a character in a video game. Frankly, the author has fallen into the temptation of making the hero into the superman in that one.
All this having been said, it's a fun read.
Customer Rating: Summary: No forward progress... this is "series filler" material Comment: I am a big fan of this series and eagerly awaited the arrival of the latest edition in hardcover.
I dove into the book immediately, but kept thinking "OK, when is the action going to start". I also found myself doing what I almost never do which is skipping large blocks of complex prose to get to something interesting. The last time I can remember doing that was in some of Jordan's later additions to the Wheel of Time series.
If I wanted to read a case study about Wiccan religion, I'd look in the library.
Because of the lack of development of existing characters, the blandness of the new characters introduced and the minuscule advancement of the overall story, I think there's really just one good word to describe how Scourge of God fits into this series...
...filler.
Customer Rating: Summary: This is good work, but... Comment: I have truly enjoyed the entire Change series, this book is no exception, however I found myself often screaming "Get on with it!" in my head.
I love Sterling's prose, and this book is certainly one of the best he's written so far, but in the context of the storyline it feels lacking.
I want to see Rudy and his band get somewhere. I hope the next story moves forward with the plot a bit, as this one really didn't advance it at all.
Yes they covered some miles, yes they made some new friends (and enemies), but the story itself hasn't advanced much.
You're a killer writer Mr.Stirling, and I'm enjoying your work, however...
GET ON WITH IT!
'nuff said. ;)
Customer Rating: Summary: Surprisingly fresh Comment: The second entry in this part of the sunrise lands remains fresh despite being many books into the telling of this saga. The characters continue to develop well and I enjoy Mr. Stirling's literary style. I have to admit with each installment I anticipate the next even more. The story, with it's mutiple threads remains intertwined well and it remains easy to follow the characters. The different parts maintain good continuity with each other and the character motivations and actions remain very believable.
