Editorial Reviews:

This 1868 compendium of ingenious mechanisms employs simple drawings to explain 507 of the small components that constitute complex machinery. Left-hand pages feature illustrations, and facing pages offer brief descriptions of  use and operation. Ranging from simple to complex, the mechanisms include cranks, pulleys, drills, wheels, and screws.

Summary: Interesting - In its day...
Comment: There is no wasted space in this book.

Very short descriptions of each device.

This book will not teach you anything about mechanics.

For the most part you will have to determine how the mechanical movements work on your own by looking at the pictures, as the extremely short descriptions fail on some accounts...

Very interesting devices that don't have much practical use today.

This book does illustrate (pun intended) the ingenuity of early inventors, and the great lengths they would go to to solve a problem...

Summary: Very complete list of mechanical movements
Comment: 507 Mechanical Movements: Mechanisms and Devices
I bought this book to find ideas to make toys. I'm not an engineer but the book is a very complete list with simple diagrams of mechanical movements. If you are not an engineer you may not understand many of the movements, but it is still very enlightening to the untrained. It is a reprint from the original of 1893.

Summary: Good, but could be better.
Comment: Keep in mind that this book 1) is paperback, 2) measures 6 1/4 inches wide by 7 1/8 inches tall, and 3) most every illustration is less than 2" square. All the illustrations are clear - printed in a grid on the left handside with a SHORT explanation of what it does on the right. The movements are described, but a lot of them leave me wondering what the heck you'd use them for in the real world. Certainly not as detailed of a book as I was expecting, but a nice LITTLE reference. On with a search for something more detailed!

Summary: just o.k.
Comment: The illustrations are well done, many of the mechanisms are repeated. The descriptions are dated. All in all, I would not buy this book again.

Summary: It is just important.
Comment: What more can be said about this essential book for all gizmologists? This is a great book just to get the brain working.
