The Fifth Edition of MECHANICS OF MATERIALS continues its legacy as the classic, definitive textbook for solid mechanics. This new edition has been edited and polished for clarity throughout, while care has been taken to preserve the highly praised features of the earlier editions. The text maintains an emphasis on presenting the fundamental concepts and applications of mechanics of materials in a manner that develops student understanding along with analytical and problem-solving skills.

Summary: "The answer in the back of the book is WRONG!"
Comment: The chapters are generally well written with in-depth, step by step examples that cover the material in the section before it. The problems themselves are particularly tricky as they require constant revision of mistakes and application of creative thinking to solve correctly.

Unfortunately, a strikingly large percentage of answers provided in the back of the book are wrong. Many times one can pinpoint the mistake made in the answers, and other times the answers are beyond absurd. An unfortunate mar on an otherwise solid book.

Summary: I didn't even need to go to class!
Comment: This textbook made up for my (nice, but) boring professor. He'd rush through several important lessons, so I'd just read them and teach myself from this book. Every chapter had excellent examples that were thoroughly explained, and I didn't find any errors. Answers are in the back, so if you're motivated, you can even learn Mechanics of Materials without any guidance from a professor.
