Editorial Reviews:

Rubyfruit Jungle is the first milestone novel in the extraordinary career of one of this country's most distinctive writers. Bawdy and moving, the ultimate word-of-mouth bestseller, Rubyfruit Jungle is about growing up a lesbian in America – and living happily ever after.

Born a bastard, Molly Bolt is adopted by a dirt-poor Southern couple who want something better for their daughter. Molly plays doctor with the boys, beats up Leroy the tub and loses her virginity to her girlfriend in sixth grade.

As she grows to realize she's different, Molly decides not to apologize for that. In no time she mesmerizes the head cheerleader of Ft. Lauderdale High and captivates a gorgeous bourbon-guzzling heiress.

But the world is not tolerant. Booted out of college for moral turpitude, an unrepentant, penniless Molly takes New York by storm, sending not a few female hearts aflutter with her startling beauty, crackling wit and fierce determination to become the greatest filmmaker that ever lived.

Critically acclaimed when first published, Rubyfruit Jungle has only grown in reputation as it has reached new generations of readers who respond to its feisty and inspiring heroine.

Summary: Fantastic book, like GLTBQ literature should be
Comment: This book is wonderful and I'm a different person for reading it. You'll miss Molly Bolt once you've finished it. Can't say enough about this book, but I also can't articulate how much it affected me. Give it a shot, you won't regret it.

Summary: Absolutely Fantastic
Comment: Molly Bolt is my freakin' hero! This story makes me think there is some sort of lesbian collective unconscious out there, since myself and many of my contemporaries have shared variations of her experiences. Like Molly, I starting opening the closet door at age eleven and had kicked it off the hinges by the time I was in my late teens. My mother wasn't as forcefully bigoted as Carrie, but she did have a tendency to bury her head in the sand for many years about it. The only difference is that I wish I had half the cajones Molly had at a young age. "I don't care whether they like me or not. Everybody's stupid, that's what I think. I care if I like me, that's what I truly care about." A bit oversimplified in some cases, but a great piece of self-talk for those of us who may unfortunately run into certain stupid homophobes. Molly the spitfire never forgets this, no matter what gets thrown in her path. I love this book; it's both hilarious and truthful about some of the realities of what's it's like to be a lesbian and carve out your niche in the world. I'd give it ten stars if I could.

Summary: Hilarious!
Comment: When I read this book I was in tears from laughing so hard I couldn't catch my breath. Ms. Brown tells a story about a Southern girl with a few twist thrown in and she injects that funny part when you lest expect it. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down! Every now and then when I need my funny bone tickled, I pick it up again! Review written by the author of Bruised But Still Strong

Summary: The Best Book I've Ever Read
Comment: Now I'm not usually a reader type. I've found myself quickly losing interest within the first five pages wondering when a book's gonna get good. However this book has turned my views around. This book is incredible. I laughed, I cried, I felt such impowerment. I honestly loved this book. It's the kind of book you'll want to read over and over again because it's impossible to have enough. Molly Bolt is a character I long to be like. To have that fiesty wit and charm. She represents the women's movement in so many ways. She's a fighter, a surviver. This book is brilliantly written and make you crave more and more. I found myself at clubs, at work, everywhere reading this book. If you love stories of overcoming obstacles, prejudices, poverty then this is the book for you. It has incredible realism and reads like an autobiography but as she's living it. Rita Mae Brown is an incredible author. She knows how to write about strength. I felt new reasons to enjoy life after reading this and now I'm hooked. Molly bolt's character should never leave us.
