Home is where the heart is . . .

This book is very close to my heart. It's about no-nonsense, simple cooking with great flavors all year round. When I began writing it, I didn't really know what recipes I would come up with, but something began to inspire me very quickly . . . my vegetable patch!

I came to realize last year that it's not always about looking out at the wider world for inspiration. Being at home, feeling relaxed and open, can also offer this. I love to spend time at home in the village where I grew up, working with the boss, Mother Nature, in my garden and seeing all my beautiful veggies coming out of the ground.

Summary: Saying "Yes" to Seasonal Cooking!
Comment: If the world were perfect, there would be a bountiful seasonal kitchen garden of infinite variety outside every kitchen door. In the spring we would find sweet spring onions and in autumn tart-sweet apples. The leaf lettuce would always taste like butter and the asparagus would always be snapping fresh. Every day our kitchen table would reflect the warmth of the day and the season. That must be what Jamie Oliver had in mind when he set out to write JAMIE AT HOME: COOK YOUR WAY TO THE GOOD LIFE. I've tended my kitchen garden--it's just 4 feet by 4 feet--for many years--spring through autumn and I have never been disappointed by the flavor of just-ripe summer picked tomatoes and sweet corn or the sweetness of frost-tipped kale or beets. A garden as small as mine produces enough vegetables, herbs, and small fruits to even put some away for the winter. Every time I find a cookbook that helps me enjoy my garden that much more, I grab it. JAMIE AT HOME is a welcome addition to my library of seasonal cookbooks. Mollie Katzen's The Vegetable Dishes I Can't Live Without and Deborah Madison's Local Flavors: Cooking and Eating from America's Farmers' Markets and Andrea Chesman's Serving Up the Harvest: Celebrating the Goodness of Fresh Vegetables are three that I use all of the time. Now, I can add JAMIE AT HOME. Jamie's recipes are sometimes a challenge but never too difficult. The book is fun to hold and read; it's eye-tasty. The recipes are presented seasonally and the garden instructions to make the ingredient vegetables and fruits happen are spot on. Good cooks should garden and good gardeners should cook. This book is filled with new old ways to grow, harvest, and prepare our food. It's a five-star treat.

Summary: Jamie gets back to the basics with great rustic cooking
Comment: This is Jamie's best cookbook yet. This is the companian to his newest Food Network series by the same name. This great chef has a knack for combining unusual elements together and presents them in a wonderfully rustic and simple manner. For the home gardener, Jamie reveals his techniques to growing vegetables and fruits, putting the reader on a personal level with the chef. It reminds me of Irish super chef Denis Cotter, who also sees the importance of understanding the growing process.

Anyone can reproduce these recipes using Jamie's basic techniques. Its his ability to meld unique combinations together that makes him a genius. This is really a must-have for any serious foodie interested in gaining insight into the creative process behind some truly great-tasting dishes. Thanks, Jamie.

Comment: This book is a lot like his others in that he tells a story along with sharing favorite recipes. The pictures are beautiful (except for the bunny picture) and in this particular book he shares his love of gardening and tips on how to garden yourself which I found very helpful. If you are a Jaime Oliver fan this is a must have.

Summary: Great down home cooking....
Comment: If you were fortunate enough to catch his "Jamie at home" show on the Food channel, then you already have this book. He uses good natural, fresh from the garden food items and makes delicious food. Love the butternut squash muffins, the Beef guiness and cheese pie...I could go on. Great hearty tasty food. He talks about his garden, his vegetables, and gives you hearty recipes for all. Love this book!!

Summary: Excellent recipes - the title is true to the contents
Comment: I bought this book from a large-scale book store for full price (doh!) only a few days ago, and I'm eager to cook many of these recipes. The directions are concise and clear, the photos are gorgeous, and the meals themselves seems like a dream come true. The book even includes educational tidbits on meat cuts, asparagus nutrients, etc. The only reason I give this cookbook 4 out of 5 stars is because the recipes aren't all that practical for every-day cooking, especially at every-day salaries. I'll have to spend five times the money (time aside) to make homemade french onion soup instead of buying some in a jar, and my favorite recipe in this book (guinness, beef, and cheese pie) will require 3 hours and 15 minutes of oven time alone. I would say this recipe book is much more usable than the NYT cookbook, which I find to be a little pretentious, but not as easy to implement as the Moosewood cookbook. However, this one has amazing non-vegetarian dishes in it. I'm definitely going to impress my boyfriend with this stuff.
