Editorial Reviews:

Josh Hamilton was the first player chosen in the first round of the 1999 baseball draft. He was destined to be one of those rare "high-character " superstars. But in 2001, working his way from the minors to the majors, all of the plans for Josh went off the rails in a moment of weakness. What followed was a 4-year nightmare of drugs and alcohol, estrangement from friends and family, and his eventual suspension from baseball.

BEYOND BELIEF details the events that led up to the derailment. Josh explains how a young man destined for fame and wealth could allow his life to be taken over by drugs and alcohol. But it is also the memoir of a spiritual journey that breaks through pain and heartbreak and leads to the rebirth of his major-league career.

Josh Hamilton makes no excuses and places no blame on anyone other than himself. He takes responsibility for his poor decisions and believes his story can help millions who battle the same demons. "I have been given a platform to tell my story" he says. "I pray every night I am a good messenger."

Summary: You cannot put this book down!
Comment: I received my book on a Friday. I had it finished by that night - I couldn't put it down. My wife started it as soon as I was finished, and she had it read in less than 24 hours. I have loaned it some other family members, and one of them just read it in one day!

Thee book is an amazing chronicle of the highs and lows of Josh Hamilton. You are with him not only when he is the #1 overall draft pick in Major League Baseball, but also during the darkest moments of drug addiction. It is also an amazing, but not overdone, story of faith that is honestly and compellingly written. You will be moved and inspired by this young man's life and struggles. Read this book, and I can just about guarantee that you will not be able to put it down.

Summary: A Scary Look At What Drug Addiction Can Do To A Person
Comment: How many ballplayers have an autobiorgraphy out, even though they've played less than two years of Major League Baseball? Just Josh Hamilton, as far as I know....and it's justified. He has a pretty unique story.

Hamilton became a nationwide sports "celebrity" in July of 2008 after putting on an incredible display of power hitting at the MLB's "Home Run Derby" at the All-Star Game in Yankee Stadium. Suddenly, the rest of the baseball world wanted to hear his story, one that was all-too-familar to the people in certain areas of the country who had followed this guy since he was top draft pick in the entire country back in 1999.

Suffice to say, things didn't work for a number of years and, basically, that's what this book is about: how the best prospect in the entire of world of baseball ruined his life and almost killed himself, only to rise from ashes and be the star he is right now.

Those readers expecting a lot of baseball stories will be disappointed. Those who want an inspiring human-interest study will be greatly pleased. This book is about Josh Hamilton, the phenom-turned cocaine addict.

Hamilton pulls no punches and takes the blame for his actions. In today's world, that's refreshing. This book is almost like one, long confession, but it's also meant to inspire others who feel there is no way they can beat their drug addiction. In that way, it's very inspriring and - no, it wasn't any of the great rehab clinics who could help him - only Jesus Christ and his supernatural power. Hamilton blames himself for all his problems and takes little or not credit for his comeback: only God gets the glory.

For those wary of being preached to, that's not what this book is. Hamilton is also clear about that, too.

The book starts slowly, but once Josh is drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays, his story begins to really pick up and it's hard to put the book down from that point.

One can only pray Josh continues to win his battle against addiction. If nothing else, this book explains how bad it gets when one is a drug addict, and how easy it is to slip back.

Summary: Reds fan says "Thumbs up!"
Comment: I am a long time Reds fan, and I was very excited when we drafted Josh in the 2006 Rule 5 draft. I followed him closely all of 2007, and much of 2008. He is one heck of a ballplayer, and an even better human being.

This book is a much more detailed version of his story than any magazine article has told. Josh really was inches away from killing himself with drugs. The numerous failed rehab attempts were new to me. Also I appreciate that he realizes, at least somewhat, how much hell he put his family through. I would guess they could tell even more horrendous stories...but this book does seem very honest.

In the end, he realizes that it is more than just baseball, it is indeed a "God thing".

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who thinks there is no way out of their substance abuse problem. Keep up the good work Josh, one day at a time....

Summary: very inspirational book.
Comment: after having a heart attack last month at age 31 , I decided to make some dramatic lifestyle changes..right when I was about to go back to my old ways a few weeks later this book came out...I have been clean and sober since and my blood pressure is stable...I am only half way trough the book but I know how it ends because watching Josh in the all star Home run Derby was the most amazing thing I have ever seen..I can't wait to Finnish this book.
