Editorial Reviews:

Horus sends the Worldbearer space marines to the planet Calth, where they are to ambush the loyalist Ultramarines. In addition to the main fleet, Horus sends a new doomsday battleship for use againsy the Ultramarines home world of Ultramar. A small strike force travels space and the warp to delay or destroy the doomsday ship to save the Ultramarines.

Summary: A pointless book
Comment: This book is perhaps the worst-written book that I have ever read. Granted, it is the Black Library which doesn't inspire much confidence in plot or storyline to begin with, but there is absolutely no reason this book should have been written other than the fact that Games Workshop wants more of your money with no regard for quality. There are so many grammatical mistakes and misspelled words in this book, that I have a very hard time believing that an editor even looked at this before it went to print, and with spell-checking it's even more confusing as to how this got to market.
That said, this book does nothing to advance the Horus Heresy at all.
It is pointless to spend any money on this book.

Summary: Another great chapter in the HH History
Comment: Many people don't realize the actual scope of the Horus Heresy, it took years for the plots to thicken and unfold. Many of the stories actually happen in the same time frames, so readers think "this book has nothing to do with the HH", or "I don't understand why this book ended with a cliffhanger". This is a "Historical" account of many events leading up and explaining what happened to lead up to, during and the final confrontation of the Horus Heresy. If you expect the story to end in 3 books, well perhaps this isn't the series for you. Personally I think it is a great concept.

This book I liked alot as it showed the different aspects of several chapters viewpoints in the 40K universe, yet they stuck together and faught against chaos in the name of there beloved emperor. If you are true die-hard 40k reader buy this book.

Summary: Needs Improvement
Comment: I really doubt that I'll read another book from this series. I appreciate that they (the authors) espire to prolong the story but I was ready for some type of conclusion several books ago. The latest book was a choir to finish. Note to publisher, move on!

Summary: True Warhammer 40K Fans read on.......
Comment: Another great book under the Horus Heresy umbrella. I am getting more than a little sick of people whining about certain books in this series being useless "side-plots". What complete nonsense! THEY are not the ones telling the story, BL are and so far they are doing a very good job. Who are YOU to tell anyone else how to tell their own stories?

I for one am very interested in learning about the background to the main relevant legions and chapters. I thought Descent of Angels was a fantastic read and has made me want to focus on the Dark Angels more in gaming both models and on PC. Battle for The Abyss takes a completely different approach and focuses on battlefleet Gothic style spaceship conflicts which makes it another great twist in the saga. I for one cannot wait for the next book, then the next and HOPE that they all take a different slant or approach the saga from a different viewpoint in each case.

After all, isn't that the enitire point of having multiple authors on a saga? Nay-sayers and impatient types go away and shut up please........

Summary: Disappointing
Comment: In a word... disappointing. The HH series started out great. Horus Rising, False Gods, and Galaxy in Flames were all wonderful narratives that brought the reader along the path that will eventually (we hope) lead up to the ultimate battle between Horus and the Emperor to decide the fate of the Galaxy. Sadly, the books after those first three seem to be less and less about the Heresy and more like side stories soley to keep the series alive and the dollars flowing into Black Library's bank account. I am a loyal reader who has bought every book in the series, naively believing that it would advance the plot, and profoundly disappointed when it didn't.

Like someone else mentioned earlier, I will be reading reviews before purchasing Horus Heresy books from now on. Until Black Library gets back on track, Battle for the Abyss will be my last purchase in this series.
