Summary: Learning Through Life
Comment: I have chosen an eclectic method of educating my children that includes using real books and hands on activities. This magazine offers articles and projects that make my lesson planning easier.

I recommend subscribing to those who take a strong approach to history and enjoy learning about real life in the past.

Summary: Whose says history has to be boring?
Comment: I use this magazine for my three kids (ages 9, 11, and 13) who are homeschooled. They love the magazine because it makes history more fun than dry textbooks and they get to really experience what life was like in a certain era.

Each article includes discussion questions, activities, movies, web sites and additional books to read. What is so great about this is that when one of the kids is really interested in something, they can jump off and explore more on their own - perfect for self-directed learning. And it saves me time in tracking down this stuff.

Some of the more memorable articles were ones like "How to Storm a Castle", "Hobo Signs in the Depression", "Success in Ancient China" and "How Chocolate Conquered Europe" - definitely not standard-fare topics, but fun nonetheless. My kids are getting hooked on history as a result! Sure, it's $5 per issue, but it's pretty thick (60+ pages) and has no ads. You can check out a sample issue online on their web site to see if it is right for your kids.
