Editorial Reviews:

A complete reference for expectant and new parents. It addresses the health and medical issues of pregnancy as well as infant and childcare.

Summary: Not worth the low low price of free
Comment: This magazine perfectly reflects the American attitudes toward child-rearing. It "mentions" breastfeeding, but it's only a token mention. In the very next paragraph is information that contradicts all the fundamentals of breastfeeding. Sleeping through the night no later than 4 months?? Breastfed babies often need an overnight feeding through their ninth month. This is just one example. I don't care that this magazine is free or only a few dollars a year. I will not be bringing this useless pile of crap into my house anymore.

Summary: better magazine savings
Comment: I've been gettng this magazine ever since I was pregnant with my first daughter and I think it's a great magazine even with my second daughter I'm still learning new info. But it's pointless to buy the magazine when you can just order a free subscription on the american baby website (I've been getting it for free for 7 years now)

Summary: Good for pregnant and moms of new babies
Comment: I ordered this when I was pregnant and loved it. It has a ton of info for pregnant and new moms! Now that my baby is almost a year old though, I find it less and less helpful. Now I turn to Parents magazine more for information. This magazine is great though for pregnancy and those first 6 months!

Summary: The Magazine for Parents of Newborns
Comment: American Baby is a monthly magazine dedicated to the challenges of raising a newborn baby. This publication covers facts about babies, like proper nutrition, teething, and other things, along with opinion pieces about young toddlers and infants, such as whether or not to use a pacifier; how to teach certain skills; etc.

This magazine is generally pretty good and it can be counted on for some good, thoughtful articles about raising and caring for your newborn or toddler. I enjoy both the factual articles and the opinionated pieces. Even the trivial facts are fun every now and then. They help to break up the seriousness of the other articles with a little bit of fun.

One thing I don't like about American Baby is the fact that it generally caters to mothers. There is virtually nothing in this magazine about fathers and the role they play in child rearing. About the closest you will get to finding something related to fathers is in the reader's letters to the editor. Here, it is common to find questions and answers about dads and their issues with raising children and with getting along with their significant other. But that is about it. The majority of the magazine deals with babies and the mother's that gave birth to them.

Another thing that makes this magazine a little less thorough and less desirable than others of its type is that it is shorter in length- only about 100 or so pages, which is about half the length of other popular baby publications. It isn't overly saturated with ads like some of them, but it still doesn't offer nearly the number of good articles as some of the lengthier reads, like Parents magazine.

Still, I think American Baby is worth a look. It gives new parents some valuable insight into the art of child rearing and some of the opinion pieces are pretty interesting. More articles directly relating to the role of fathers would be nice, but I still think there is enough value here to recommend this magazine.

Summary: Sometimes something glitters in the dust
Comment: You will go through issue after issue, wondering if it contains anything beyond `cutesy' photo ops and rehashed articles of things you already knew, and then suddenly they will come up with a gem of an article that will actually add to your parenting portfolio, or knowledge.
